#ResultsDay

Results day has become this mammoth day – the day whereby letters and numbers on a piece of paper (or screen!) will publicly qualify how well you answered questions in May. It sounds dismissive and I don’t mean it to be – or maybe I do. Ok let’s scroll back a few years…

Results day rolled around… everyone was nervous seemingly no one as much as me this was my third 6th form results day – yes you read right – third – year 12 twice. With top two choices confirmed in UCAS I had my heart set on my first choice. In hindsight perhaps for the wrong reasons, but 18yr old me daren’t admit it at the time.

You can probably recall your own experience of the school hall during the holidays – weird, quiet, clean and set up with boxes of envelopes taking centre stage. I had to get it right this time, i knew the letters i had to see, i just had to… they weren’t there. And in reading those three main letters, A’Level Results Day was instantly branded the worst day of my life. I didn’t have accommodation for my second choice, I didn’t have a plan to move hours from home, I can’t even be sure the course was definitely what i wanted to do. Now whilst mental health is ever present in the media and discussed more openly now it really wasn’t then. Of all the facts I learnt, the equations I could solve, what I seemingly couldn’t understand, apply or evaluate was failure – yes that’s what it felt like – failure.

For those who open those envelopes, emails or their UCAS account page if you read what you didn’t want to see – it is not failure. It perhaps means a new route is now ahead of you, the options may have changed but it does not brand you a failure. I can not repeat this enough. Now whilst this blog alone will not provide you the comfort needed for your next steps a conversation addressing all your options may well do.

But just before I move on, in the same way ‘missing’ grades doesn’t define you, neither does securing the best grades ever. Remember just because you are an A* student won’t make you an A* adult. Now 100% celebrate in your achievements, but be gracious, studious and know this is just one step on the ladder. The promises that can sometimes be made in the classroom need a little closer scrutiny – but that’s a blog for another day.

So…What next?

Too many young people need a greater exposure to the pathways that are available. HireHigher has been created for one sole purpose and that is to show, share and stipulate that there is a helping hand for the students of today from the students of yesterday.
